Hey folks, Just thought I would say hello. I'm moving back from austin this next week and was looking to meet some cool people who can clue me in on cool stuff to do in Dallas these days. I've been gone for a little while now.

Welcome back! Want to elaborate on your idea of what is cool? Advantage of being in a metroplex is that there is at least sumthin' for almost everyone.

Only things that come to mind for sometime soon is Inwood Midnight Movies:
    this weekend- original Willy Wonka
following weekend- Nightmare before Christmas (*does a happy dance*)

And in general, great drink specials at the Billiard Bar, along with billiards and cool people (usually)

Jazz, good movies, good shows of any kind of music. Wine and food. I'm a cook professionally so anything pertaining to food and farmers markets would be great.

        Ok!

        Movies:
Inwood/Magnolia (Landmark) always have good movies and have special screenings (sometimes free) to them if you get on their e-mailing list. Same with the Angelika.

        Music:
Fallout Lounge has a really good (music only, as far as I know) open mic night on Mondays. Small venue, primarily acoustic alternative type music, sometimes featuring members of local favorites like the TahDahs (sp?)
Terrilli's on Greenville used to have great jazz on Tuesday nights but I'm not sure if that's still happening
Oct 12th- fusion caliente! flamenco-jazz fusion at projectx theatre
Oct 26th- drummers of Japan at Bass Hall

        Food:
This weekend is the lebanese food festival at Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic church (this past weekend was Greek food fest...yum!)
Following weekend is ArmeniaFest Cultural and Food Festival in carrollton
Shines Mediterranean Market is having a cooking demo on the 8th
The Wooden Spoon is having a Norwegian bread cooking demo on the 22nd and Scandinavian waffle making and eating on the 29th

        Wine:
Wine Therapist used to have an open drum jam on Monday nights (not sure if still happening)

If any of these sound of interest let me know and I can get you more specifics plus other similar happenings.

Good God, where do you get all of this info? I want on the list!

lol...info comes from all over the place...most of the international listings above come from www.dfwinternational.org (they send out weekly e-mails of the highlights for that coming week, the website has the full calendar)
the KERA (kera.org) events page usually has alot of good listings (heard about the Saturday nights at Nasher while listening to the radio)
much of my music info comes from various friends who are musicians...if Wayne Delano is still the guy playing on Tuesdays at Terrilli's, I highly recommend checking him out if you like jazz!!!

Thanks for the info, I'm subscribing to the newsletters. I do like jazz, a friend of mine sings at the DMA occassionally, when they do jazz under the stars.

If you don't mind making the trek out to Fort Worth, Bass Hall has alot of great musical performances. I saw Bela Fleck and the Flecktones there last year and it was awesome! I'm really excited about Yamato: the drummers from Japan this month. Bass Hall also has a mailing list: www.basshall.com

and the DMA events are usually alot of fun as well!

Thanks for the link to Bass Hall, the drummers look pretty cool, I might have to go to that.

Do you go to late nights at the DMA? I keep planning on going, but haven't made it, yet.

No I haven't made it to a late night yet but keep meaning to as well. I usually go to the DMA when friends are playing but I think I'm going to shoot for October 20th live jazz night followed by a preview (prehear?) of Simply Red's latest. I know they were kinda cheesy back in the day, and I'm sure they still are, but Mick Hucknall's voice has always made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Sounds fun. I may have to check that out, but I'm definately going to try and go to late night this month. They are also having a lecture on the 30th that I want to go to, East Meets West: Shiva & Dionysus. Plus they are having a free event on the 15th called Discover India, it is actually outside the DMA, in cooperation with some of the other nearby museums.

here is a question. Does anyone know a good place to buy a hat in Dallas? I'm looking for a straw fedora, and can't seem to locate one. I"m not sure what my hat size is or I would just get one online.

Have you tried Hatco Hats in Garland? An ex of mine always wore leather hats, and he was real particular about the style but found ones he liked in Garland. They could possibly have straw fedoras. If not, have someone there measure your head, get your hat size, then order online...just a thought!

I just got one for $5 at *gasp* Hot Topic online. One size. I got it for my hubby but his head was too big so it's mine.
